A polished sphere of approximately 60mm and 296g, cut from sodalite syenite, a natural igneous rock in which sodalite forms as a primary mineral alongside alkali feldspar, nepheline, and accessory minerals. In daylight the sphere presents in a warm grey-brown tone, the blended color of its mineral components: the sodalite contributes grey-blue patches, the feldspar a pale cream-grey, and iron-bearing minerals the warmer brown tones. Under longwave UV (365nm), the sodalite component fluoresces orange, visible as scattered bright patches distributed across the sphere surface against the non-fluorescent matrix minerals.
Sodalite syenite is a rock type, not a single mineral: sodalite grows as one component within an intrusive igneous rock alongside feldspar and nepheline rather than forming isolated crystals. The grey-brown appearance in daylight reflects this multi-mineral composition; the orange UV response comes from the sodalite component specifically. From China, where sodalite syenite is quarried and shaped into spheres and decorative forms.
