A polished sphere of 61.5mm and 314g, cut from sodalite syenite, a natural igneous rock composed of sodalite, alkali feldspar, nepheline, and accessory minerals. The daylight appearance is warm grey-brown, the combined color of the rock's mineral components: sodalite provides grey-blue zones, feldspar adds pale cream-grey areas, and iron-bearing minerals contribute warmer brown patches. Under longwave UV (365nm), the sodalite fluoresces orange in scattered patches across the sphere surface against the non-fluorescent matrix minerals.
Sodalite syenite is a rock type in which sodalite crystallizes as part of a multi-mineral igneous body rather than as isolated crystals. The grey-brown daylight appearance reflects all the matrix minerals together; the UV fluorescence is specific to the sodalite content. At 61.5mm and 314g this sphere is slightly larger and heavier than the 60mm companion. From China.
