A broadly flat rough crystal showing the most characteristic feature of the spodumene group: a large, smooth, glassy cleavage face that dominates the front of the piece. The body is near-colorless to very pale icy green, light in tone and semi-transparent, with diffuse inner light passing gently through the mineral's depth. Minor dark mineral flecks are visible on the surface, typical of a natural rough specimen. Under 365nm UV, the crystal transforms dramatically, glowing a vivid orange-red throughout its mass.

Afghanistan's pegmatite deposits produce spodumene across a wide color range, from pale near-colorless and faint green through to the vivid pink variety known as kunzite. This crystal is untreated rough, presented exactly as it came from the ground with no cutting, heating, or other enhancement. Rough spodumene crystals are well suited to mineral display collections and make excellent study pieces for understanding the mineral's perfect two-direction cleavage, which is clearly developed on this example.
