Raw acicular malachite - a cluster of fine needle-like crystals grown in radiating fan-shaped sprays from multiple growth centres. The crystal tips catch light like tiny mirrors and produce a sparkling, almost metallic shimmer that polished malachite cannot replicate. Vivid emerald and Kelly green on the illuminated crystal faces; deep forest green to near-black in the shadowed zones between the radiating fans. Dark grey-black host rock (likely limonite matrix typical of DRC material) is visible between the crystal clusters. The overall form is three-dimensional and irregular - multiple distinct radiating fans grouped into a compound aggregate at 37x29mm.
Acicular malachite is far less commonly seen than the banded botryoidal material used for cabochons - this growth form shows the mineral as it actually crystallises, in delicate needle sprays rather than rounded layered masses. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the world's primary source for fine malachite specimens of all habits. At 22g this is a display-scale piece suited for a mineral collection, a desk or shelf specimen, or as raw decorative material. Natural malachite crystal specimen, Congo.
