Natural Goshenite Gemstones

Goshenite is the colorless variety of beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18), pure beryl without the trace elements that color emerald, aquamarine or morganite. It is valued for its clarity and clean, glassy brilliance, and it is often the most transparent member of the beryl family. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 it wears well in any setting, from everyday rings to fine pieces.

About goshenite

Goshenite is named after Goshen, Massachusetts, where it was first described. Colorless beryl was once ground into lenses for spectacles, and the German word for glasses, Brille, comes from the Latin beryllus. Brazil is the main source today, along with Madagascar, Pakistan and the United States. Goshenite is rarely treated.

What you'll find in this collection

Our goshenite comes from Brazil and is untreated. You'll find faceted pears and marquises from about half a carat to nearly 2 carats, clear and colorless, suited to accent stones and earrings.

How to recognise goshenite

Goshenite is doubly refractive with a fairly low refractive index of about 1.57, so it shows less fire than diamond or white sapphire, but a soft, even brilliance. It is usually very clean. Its low density, about 2.7, and its hardness help separate it from colorless quartz, topaz and glass.

Caring for goshenite

Goshenite is hard and wears well. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and avoid sudden temperature changes.
