Natural Zircon Gemstones

Natural Zircon Gemstones

Zircon is a zirconium silicate (ZrSiO4), a natural gemstone not to be confused with cubic zirconia, which is man-made. It comes in warm golden and reddish brown tones, sky blue, green and near-colorless, and its very high refractive index and dispersion give it more brilliance and fire than most gemstones. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 it suits most jewelry.

About zircon

Zircon is a birthstone for December. It is also one of the oldest minerals on Earth: zircon grains from Western Australia have been dated to about 4.4 billion years. Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar, Tanzania and Australia are important gem sources, and Cambodia is known for blue zircon. Heat treatment is common and goes back centuries, especially for blue and colorless zircon.

What you'll find in this collection

Our zircon comes from Tanzania and Cambodia, and most stones are untreated, with heated stones marked on the listing. You'll find faceted ovals, marquises, pears and rounds from about 1 to 2.3 carats, in orange, champagne, white and pink.

How to recognise zircon

Zircon has strong double refraction, so looking into a faceted stone you can usually see the back facet edges doubled, which separates it from diamond and cubic zirconia. Its dispersion is close to that of diamond, giving strong flashes of spectral color. It is also dense, about 4.7, so a zircon feels heavy for its size.

Caring for zircon

Zircon is hard but brittle, and the facet edges can wear or chip over time. Choose protective settings, store it apart from other gems, and clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush. Some heated zircon can change color with long exposure to strong light.

Every stone is natural, and each listing gives its weight, size, origin and treatment, with photos of the actual stone.
