Special Effect Gemstones
Some gemstones do more than hold a color. Under the right light they reveal an optical effect: a star that glides across the surface as you tilt the stone, a single bright band like a cat's eye, or a color that shifts completely when you move from daylight to lamplight.

These effects come from what sits inside the stone. Asterism and cat's eye are caused by fine parallel inclusions reflecting light back as a star or a line, while color change depends on how trace elements absorb daylight and incandescent light differently.
