A broadly circular polished ammonite with one of the darkest shells in this series - near-black ground with suture lines blended into the dark base, visible mainly as faint amber markings on the upper whorl. Scattered white-grey mineral inclusions and a small red iridescent spot near the umbilicus add detail.
The very dark shell gives this a dramatic, moody character compared to the more amber-toned specimens. Natural ammonite fossil from China, polished at 34mm.

About ammonite
Ammonites are fossil shells of extinct sea animals related to today’s octopus and squid. Over millions of years the shell was replaced by minerals, often calcite, which is 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
Cleaning
Wipe it with a soft cloth dampened in lukewarm water and dry it at once. Do not soak it or leave it in water. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: the fossil is soft and can crack along its chamber walls. Keep it away from acids, even lemon juice and vinegar, which dissolve its minerals.
Wear and storage
Display it on a stand or a soft cloth so it cannot roll or knock against harder stones, and store it wrapped in a soft cloth. Below 7 on the Mohs scale, it can be scratched even by household dust, which contains quartz, so dust it gently.
