A well-preserved polished ammonite with a distinctive gear-like raised ridge around the umbilicus - a three-dimensional detail showing nodular preservation at the navel. Dark chocolate-brown shell with amber-brown suture patterning and a faint blue iridescence at the umbilical boss.
The raised umbilical rim gives this specimen a tactile physical texture distinct from flat-faced examples. Natural ammonite fossil from China, polished at 44mm.

About ammonite
Ammonites are fossil shells of extinct sea animals related to today’s octopus and squid. Over millions of years the shell was replaced by minerals, often calcite, which is 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
Cleaning
Wipe it with a soft cloth dampened in lukewarm water and dry it at once. Do not soak it or leave it in water. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: the fossil is soft and can crack along its chamber walls. Keep it away from acids, even lemon juice and vinegar, which dissolve its minerals.
Wear and storage
Display it on a stand or a soft cloth so it cannot roll or knock against harder stones, and store it wrapped in a soft cloth. Below 7 on the Mohs scale, it can be scratched even by household dust, which contains quartz, so dust it gently.
