A square-cut sapphire with a wide, flat face and a color so deeply saturated that it reads close to black through the center, opening into a cool navy with green-teal glints where the light catches the crown facets. The step-cut crown keeps the outline crisp and gives the stone a good deal of face for its 0.51ct. Held to the light, some internal veiling and a few darker streaks show through the top, consistent with SI clarity. The polish is clean and the corners are sharp.
Australian sapphire is known for exactly this kind of dark, strongly saturated blue, often with a green or teal secondary hue that sets it apart from the warmer blues of Sri Lanka and Madagascar. This stone is untreated, with no heat of any kind, so the depth of color is entirely its own. The broad square face suits bezel and flush settings, and rewards a design that lets light in from behind or beside the stone rather than asking it to sparkle from the front. Sapphire is the September birthstone.
Natural Australian blue sapphire, untreated, September birthstone, sold loose.

About sapphire
Sapphire is corundum in every color except red. At 9 on the Mohs scale it is second only to diamond, and it is also very tough with no cleavage, so it rarely chips or splits when knocked. Together that makes it one of the most durable gemstones for everyday wear, rings included.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted sapphire, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Sapphire is very hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Only diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from diamonds and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This sapphire is untreated. Sapphire handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
