The Convoy C8 UVC flashlight emits 255nm shortwave ultraviolet light, the classic wavelength for mineral fluorescence. Many minerals that stay dull under a 365nm longwave light glow brightly under shortwave, such as scheelite (bluish white), willemite (green) and many calcites.
It uses the same grey C8 body as our other Convoy lights, with a large head and an extension tube so you can run it on one or two 18650 batteries. Convoy's own LED test report for this model shows a peak at 256nm with about 112mW of UV output, which is a real shortwave source in a handheld size.
✨ Features:
- Wavelength: 255nm UVC (shortwave), measured peak 256nm
- UV output: about 112mW radiant flux (manufacturer's LED test)
- Filter: ZWB3 glass, lets the UV through and holds back most visible light
- Material: anodized aluminium alloy, grey finish
- Extension tube included: runs on 1x or 2x 18650 batteries (not included)
- Large reflector head for a wide UV spot
- Tail lanyard holes for a wrist strap
✅ Ideal for:
- Shortwave fluorescence of minerals such as scheelite, willemite and calcite
- Mineral prospecting and sorting specimens at night
- Comparing a specimen under longwave and shortwave UV

- Never at people or animalsDo not point the beam at eyes, skin, people or animals, yourself included. Watch for reflections from glass, mirrors, polished stones and metal too.
- Symptoms come laterUV eye burns (photokeratitis) do not hurt straight away. Gritty, watering, painful eyes and sensitivity to light appear 6 to 12 hours later. If that happens after using the light, see a doctor.
About this light
This light emits 255nm shortwave ultraviolet (UVC). It is the most energetic UV band. It does not reach us in sunlight because the atmosphere absorbs it, and it is the band used in germicidal lamps. At close range it can burn the surface of the eyes and skin within seconds. Most of the output is invisible: the faint violet glow says nothing about how strong the UV is.
Safe use
Switch the light on only when it is pointed at the specimen, ideally in a darkened room or inside a box. Wear goggles every time, and cover your hands and arms (gloves and long sleeves) for anything longer than a quick look. Keep sessions short and switch the light off between specimens.
Goggles
Use goggles or safety glasses made for UV: look for the EN 170 marking or a stated UV400 rating. Clear polycarbonate safety glasses block UVB and UVC. Ordinary prescription glasses and sunglasses are not reliable protection unless they are UV-rated.
Storage
Keep it out of reach of children, and label it as a UVC light so nobody uses it as an ordinary torch.
- BatteriesUse good quality 18650 cells of the type stated in the description and insert them the right way round. Carry spare cells in a case so their ends cannot touch keys or coins. Stop using a cell with a torn wrap or a dent. Do not leave the light running unattended: the head gets warm with long use.
