A small cushion-cut chrome diopside from Russia, with a rich, vivid green color leaning toward a lively grass-green range with yellow-green warmth. The stone has good transparency, and the facets return bright green flashes in direct light. At 5.8x3.9mm the proportions are pleasingly compact, with well-cut corners on the cushion shape and a clean, polished surface.
Chrome diopside owes its saturated green color to chromium, the same element responsible for the green in emeralds and tsavorite garnet. Russian material, mined mainly from the Inagli deposit in Siberia, typically yields brighter, lighter-toned stones at smaller carat weights. This stone is untreated and a natural choice for setting in earrings or a pendant.

Diopside is 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale with good cleavage along two planes, so it needs protection from knocks and scratches.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, and a knock can split it. Wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.

This diopside is untreated. Diopside should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
