Banded malachite with a distinctive three-tone character. The banding runs lengthwise along the long axis in broad, gently arcing parallel layers, but what sets this pair apart is a wide pale cream-to-mint zone cutting across the lower half of each stone. That pale band, finely veined with green, is clearly defined and creates an unmistakable three-tone structure: a dark forest-green upper band, the wide pale mint zone, and a dark green band below. The upper and lower greens are dense and saturated, while the pale zone reads almost white in direct light. Both stones share the structure and come from the same material. The profile is very low and flat, almost tablet-like, with a high-gloss mirror polish. Fine natural micro-fracture lines are visible in the surface, typical of malachite.
The pale chalky band is the defining visual character of this pair and gives them a completely different look from uniformly green malachite. The elongated narrow oval at 27x12mm is a classic drop earring shape.

About malachite
Malachite is a copper carbonate whose bands of green grow in layers, much like agate. At 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale it is soft and scratches easily.
Cleaning
Wipe it with a soft cloth dampened in lukewarm water and dry it at once. Do not soak it or leave it in water. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: malachite is soft and porous. Keep it away from acids, even lemon juice and vinegar, and household cleaners, which etch it.
Wear and storage
Below 7 on the Mohs scale, it can be scratched even by household dust, which contains quartz. It suits pendants, earrings and brooches better than rings worn every day. Store it on its own in a soft pouch, away from harder stones.
For your jeweler
These stones are untreated. Malachite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. A bezel or another protective setting suits it best.
