Daylight leaves this color change garnet almost colorless, a pale warm grey with the faintest beige cast, and then incandescent light turns it a clear peach orange. In one sense it is the most extreme transformation in the group: the stone goes from having barely any color at all to having plenty. At 5.3x4.5mm the oval is a comfortable size, cut with a wide table. The material carries visible internal features and a slightly cloudy texture through the middle, consistent with the SI grade.
The oval suits a pendant, where the stone can be looked at under different lights rather than glanced at on a hand. Untreated. Watching a near-colorless stone find a color when someone switches on a lamp is the whole appeal here, and it is worth demonstrating to anyone who does not believe garnet does this. For a January birthday it is about as far from the expected red as garnet gets.

About garnet
Garnet is a family of closely related minerals, including rhodolite, spessartine, grossular and tsavorite. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a good stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted garnet, but skip steam: sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Garnet is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This garnet is untreated. Garnet takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
