A richly included oval Nigerian emerald with a light, cool blue-green tone and an extensive internal landscape of fractures and cleavage planes that give the stone real character and personality. The inclusions are boldly visible - this is an emerald that wears its natural history openly, with feathers and planes of inclusion creating almost abstract patterns within the generous oval silhouette.
For those who value authenticity above all else, this is a genuinely natural emerald with nothing to hide. Nigerian origin; standard oil treatment. The inclusions are part of the story of every natural emerald, and this stone has plenty to tell. Works beautifully as a collector's stone or in a wide bezel setting that frames rather than conceals the natural features. Sold as a single loose stone.
Natural Nigerian emerald, May birthstone - sold loose.

About emerald
Emerald is the green variety of beryl. It is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, but almost every emerald has natural fractures, and most are clarity-enhanced with oil or resin, so it is more fragile than its hardness suggests.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: they can drive out the oil or resin most emeralds carry in their fractures, and open the fractures themselves. Keep solvents, alcohol and jewelry cleaners away from it for the same reason.
Wear and storage
A sharp knock against stone or metal can still chip an emerald, most often at the thin edges and points. Store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch: it scratches softer gems, and topaz, sapphire and diamond can scratch it.
For your jeweler
This emerald is clarity-enhanced with oil, as is usual for emerald. Emerald should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Re-oiling is a normal service if a fracture becomes more visible over time.
