This small green grossular garnet holds a vivid grass green that reads far brighter than its half-carat weight would suggest. The oval is faceted with a shallow crown and a neat outline, and the color stays even across the face apart from a darker, slightly greyish zone toward the right edge where the material thickens. Fine internal texture and a scatter of pinpoints show up under close light, in keeping with the SI grade. Against a dark background the green almost glows.
At 5x4.3mm this is accent-stone territory: a stud, a side stone, or one of a row set into a band. Green grossular from African deposits shows a pure green without the blue lean that some other green gems carry, and this one has had no treatment of any kind. Garnet is the January birthstone, and a green one makes an unexpected version of it.
Natural green grossular garnet, January birthstone, sold loose.

About garnet
Garnet is a family of closely related minerals, including rhodolite, spessartine, grossular and tsavorite. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a good stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted garnet, but skip steam: sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Garnet is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This garnet is untreated. Garnet takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
