A low mound of milky quartz crystals, well terminated and grown close together, running from larger crystals at the top to smaller ones along the base. The color is a soft white that lightens toward translucent at the crystal tips, and faint growth lines show inside the larger individuals. At the lower right a small patch of dark host rock carrying brassy pyrite breaks the white ground, the only dark note on the piece.
This is vein quartz from the Bulgarian lead-zinc field in the Rhodope Mountains, the same material that hosts the galena and sphalerite from those workings, here crystallized cleanly into an open pocket. Untreated. Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale, hard and easy to handle, and at 250g and 101mm it is a manageable size for a desk or a shelf.
Natural quartz crystal cluster, Bulgaria, single piece.

About quartz
Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage. It is hard, but crystal points and edges can chip when knocked.
Cleaning
Rinse it in lukewarm water and brush off any dirt with a soft brush, then let it dry. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: they can crack the crystals.
Wear and storage
Quartz crystals are hard, but their points and edges can chip if knocked. Store the cluster padded and apart from other specimens.
Scale
True to scale: 101 × 60 × 53 mm
