A flat, elongated rough piece with vivid royal blue sodalite and lazurite dominating the face, interspersed with scattered white calcite patches and small rust-orange iron oxidation spots. The blue is dense and covers most of the specimen surface, with the calcite showing as irregular pale areas within the matrix and the rust spots typical of iron-bearing minerals in this rock type. The flat slab-like form shows the material's natural layered character.
The blue comes from lazurite, the same mineral responsible for the color of lapis lazuli, which forms here alongside sodalite in the metamorphic rock of Badakhshan, Afghanistan. The white calcite and orange iron oxidation are the standard accompanying minerals in this assemblage. At 62mm in length this is an elongated, slim piece that displays well on a flat surface. The sodalite and calcite fluoresce orange under longwave UV (365nm).
