Rubellite in a dusky, wine-leaning register: this octagon carries a medium-dark raspberry that shades toward plum-purple across the table, then lets go a bright crimson flash at the left end and a clear magenta one at the right. The pavilion is scissor cut, so the underside returns short crossed wedges of red. Dark needles and fine internal lines run through the stone, natural inclusions consistent with SI clarity.
Rubellite is the trade name reserved for the pink to red end of tourmaline, and Mozambique is one of its steadier sources, producing this kind of medium-dark raspberry in commercial quantities. The stone is untreated. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and at 8.7 by 5.3mm the elongated octagon suits a slim east-west ring or a pendant drop. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
