A natural rutile quartz from India, 103ct in a large oval cabochon measuring 42.2x30mm. The stone is nearly colorless to very pale smoky-white, semi-transparent, with fine golden and silver rutile needles distributed throughout the quartz body - visible as delicate hair-like inclusions that catch the light across the broad, smooth domed surface.
At 42x30mm and 103ct this is a very large cabochon, suited to display or to an ambitious pendant focal stone. Rutile quartz from India is prized for its fine needle inclusions that create a natural "silk" effect visible through the translucent body. About rutilated quartz
Rutilated quartz is clear quartz with needles of rutile grown through it. The needles can reach the surface, so treat it a little more gently than plain quartz.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Rutilated quartz is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
