A large, irregular mass built from rounded lobes and knobs, every surface covered in bright white sugar quartz. The crust is thick and evenly grown, fine enough to give the whole piece a soft granular texture, and it takes on a faint blue-grey shading in the deeper hollows where the chalcedony underneath shows through. The outline is open and branching rather than blocky, with several arms and recesses that give the piece shadow and depth from any angle.
The lobed shape comes from the chalcedony core, which grew outward in rounded layers before the quartz crystallized across it. The two together are what the trade calls sugar quartz. This one is from the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria. Untreated. Hardness is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is durable, and at 149mm and 1079g it has the size for a main shelf position.

About quartz
Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage. It is hard, but crystal points and edges can chip when knocked.
Cleaning
Do not wash it. Dust it with a soft, dry brush or an air blower, and keep it dry. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: they can crack the crystals.
Wear and storage
Store it padded and apart from other specimens, so its edges and faces do not chip or scratch. Lift it by its base or matrix, not by the crystals.
Scale
True to scale: 149 × 143 × 75 mm
Shown next to a €1 coin (23.25 mm) in the exact ratio, so you can picture the real size. The outline is approximate.
