Cut with a bold checkerboard pattern, this apatite plays with light in overlapping diamond-shaped facets that shift between pale honey and deep amber-yellow depending on the angle. The body is a rich, saturated golden yellow, warm and glowing rather than pale, and holds a scatter of fine natural needle inclusions running through the stone, visible as delicate thread-like lines when held to the light. At over 21 carats the stone has real physical presence, and its semi-transparent depth gives it a soft, honeyed glow rather than hard brilliance.
Apatite of this size and saturation comes from African deposits, where larger crystals in warm yellow to golden tones turn up alongside the more common pale material. This piece is completely untreated, its deep color entirely the product of nature rather than heat or diffusion. Given its size, it works well as a statement pendant or in a protected bezel setting, and makes an equally striking addition to a gemstone collection or display case.

About apatite
Apatite is a calcium phosphate. At 5 on the Mohs scale it is soft for a gemstone and sensitive to acids, heat and knocks, so it is best for pendants, earrings or a collection.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can crack it. Keep it away from acids, including lemon juice and vinegar, and household cleaners.
Wear and storage
With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, and a knock can chip it. Wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.
For your jeweler
This apatite is untreated. Apatite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. A bezel or another protective setting suits it best.
