Not a faceted stone but a polished freeform, worked into a soft wedge with one rounded tip and a broader squared end. The color is the interesting part: a bright magenta-pink concentrated at the narrow tip runs back into a soft greyish lavender-violet across the body, with a darker plum band drifting through the middle. The finish is a high gloss all over, and a little natural pitting remains at the wide end. The material is semi-transparent, so light enters the surface and glows from within.
Polishing suits tourmaline like this, where the color zoning and the semi-transparent body show best across a smooth curve. It is untreated African material. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and a freeform piece like this suits a wire wrap, a bezel that follows its outline, or simply a place in a collection of color-zoned tourmaline. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.
Natural bi-color tourmaline, polished tumble, untreated, sold loose.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Display it on a stand or a soft cloth so it cannot roll or knock against harder stones, and store it wrapped in a soft cloth.
