A grey oval chrysoberyl cat's eye cabochon from Sri Lanka, 0.8ct at 6.7x4.3mm. The stone has an elongated oval profile with a pale grey body color. A chatoyant band crosses the dome and shifts clearly under directional light. The elongated shape gives the cat's eye effect good movement across its long axis.

About chrysoberyl
Chrysoberyl is 8.5 on the Mohs scale and has excellent toughness, which makes it one of the most durable gemstones. It has one cleavage plane, but this is rarely a problem.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: cabochons usually contain fine inclusions or fissures that vibration and heat can open.
Wear and storage
The cat’s eye line comes from fine parallel fibers or needles inside the stone, which also make it slightly less tough than a clean faceted stone, so treat the domed surface gently. Chrysoberyl is hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from them and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This chrysoberyl is untreated. Chrysoberyl handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
