A compact octagon, 9.5 by 4.8mm, in a mossy olive green with a chartreuse band running along the lower pavilion where the step facets return light, and dark, almost black shoulders at either end. The proportions are shorter and squarer than the long baguettes here, which concentrates the color. A small dark needle bundle sits low in the center of the stone, a natural inclusion consistent with SI clarity.
Moss and olive greens make up a large share of African tourmaline production, and they hold their color well under warm indoor lighting, which is not true of every green gem. This stone is untreated. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, suitable for regular wear, and an octagon of this shape sets neatly into a signet or an east-west band. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.
Natural green tourmaline, untreated, October birthstone, sold loose.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This tourmaline is untreated. Tourmaline should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath.
