Longer and considerably narrower than its 16mm sibling, this baguette runs 19.4 by 5mm, and the extra length makes the color bands run as continuous stripes. The base tone is a khaki-olive, cut through by bright golden-yellow lines where the long facets catch the light, and the two ends darken almost to black. A scattering of small golden pinpoints sits inside; otherwise the VS clarity leaves the stone transparent from end to end.
Green tourmaline of this warm olive-gold cast comes from the same Mozambique workings that supply the cooler forest greens. This stone is untreated. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. At nearly 2cm long it is a designer piece: a single dramatic baguette across a ring, a linear pendant, or a paired accent flanking a larger center stone. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.
Natural green tourmaline baguette, untreated, sold loose.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This tourmaline is untreated. Tourmaline should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath.
