The largest of the green baguettes in this group and the most substantial in proportion at 16.3 by 6.3mm. The body is a deep olive green, and along the long pavilion facets it lights up in rich ribbons of golden yellow, so the stone alternates between olive and gold as it moves. Both clipped ends close down to a dark aubergine, almost plum, which frames the brighter center. The facet edges are crisp and the polish is bright, and at VS clarity there is very little inside to interrupt the run of color down the length.
Those dark plum ends are the same tourmaline seen along the crystal axis, where the mineral absorbs far more light; the golden-olive face is the view across it. Mozambique produces green tourmaline in long prismatic crystals that suit exactly this kind of extended step cut. Untreated. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and at over 4ct in a clean elongated baguette this is a genuine statement stone for an east-west ring or a bold pendant. About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
