Under daylight this color change garnet sits in a cool steel teal, closer to blue-green than to grass, and under a household bulb the same stone turns a soft lilac pink. The two frames of the photograph show the states side by side, and the shift is complete rather than partial: no trace of the teal survives into the warm-light frame. At 3x2.3mm the oval is tiny, cut with small neat facets and a clean bright polish. One dark speck sits at the right edge, the only visible inclusion, consistent with the VS grade.
The effect comes from vanadium in the crystal, which absorbs light differently depending on the source, and it is entirely natural: no treatment produces or improves it. East African deposits supply most of the color change garnet that reaches the market. A stone this small belongs in a cluster or as an accent where its trick can still be noticed up close. January's birthstone, in a form most people have never seen.

About garnet
Garnet is a family of closely related minerals, including rhodolite, spessartine, grossular and tsavorite. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a good stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted garnet, but skip steam: sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Garnet is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This garnet is untreated. Garnet takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
