Unlike most of the stones in this group, this color change garnet is purple in both lights. Daylight gives it a deep, almost inky violet with pink flashing at the edges; incandescent light lifts the whole stone into a bright magenta purple. The change here is one of intensity rather than of hue, which some collectors prefer to the green-to-pink stones. The 2.7mm round is cleanly cut and free of visible inclusions, consistent with the VS grade.
Purple to magenta is a less common expression of the effect than the blue-green to pink seen elsewhere in this collection, so this one is worth having if you are building a set that shows the range. African in origin and untreated. At 2.7mm it will do its best work set close to the eye, in a ring or a stud rather than a pendant. January's birthstone, in a color that will confuse anyone who thinks they know garnet.

About garnet
Garnet is a family of closely related minerals, including rhodolite, spessartine, grossular and tsavorite. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a good stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted garnet, but skip steam: sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Garnet is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This garnet is untreated. Garnet takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
