In daylight this color change garnet is an olive brown shot with gold, the kind of color that looks unremarkable until the light changes; under incandescent light it becomes a dusty rose red. Just under a carat at 6.8x4.8mm, it is one of the two larger stones here, and the size lets both states be judged properly. The oval is cut with broad facets that carry the color in wide panels. Internal texture and a scattering of dark specks show through the body, consistent with the SI grade.
Garnet is January's stone, and this is the version that makes people look twice at a birthstone they thought they understood. Madagascan color change garnet tends toward these warm earth tones at both ends of the shift rather than the cooler greens. At this size it can lead a pendant or a ring on its own. Untreated, with the change entirely a function of the crystal.

About garnet
Garnet is a family of closely related minerals, including rhodolite, spessartine, grossular and tsavorite. At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it is a good stone for everyday wear.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. An ultrasonic cleaner is usually fine for a clean faceted garnet, but skip steam: sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
Garnet is hard enough for everyday wear, and it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This garnet is untreated. Garnet takes normal setting well, but keep it out of direct torch flame: sudden heat can crack it or change its color.
