A small natural alexandrite in a 2.7mm round cut. In daylight the stone presents as a soft mint-green with some darker tonal patches within; under incandescent light it shifts to a pale pinkish-lavender. The color change is gentle but clearly visible between the two light sources as shown in the product photos. SI clarity, fluorescent. Russia origin.
Russian alexandrite is the classic origin for this rare color-change chrysoberyl, first discovered in the Ural Mountains. These small stones are natural and untreated, offering genuine color change at a size suited to small accent stone applications, pavé work, or collector use. About alexandrite
Alexandrite is the color change variety of chrysoberyl: greenish in daylight, reddish to purplish under warm incandescent light. At 8.5 on the Mohs scale and with excellent toughness, it is one of the most durable gemstones. It has one cleavage plane, but this is rarely a problem.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are usually fine for a faceted alexandrite, but skip them if the stone has fissures that reach the surface.
Wear and storage
Alexandrite is hard, so it can scratch softer gemstones stored with it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so keep it apart from them and store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This alexandrite is untreated. Alexandrite handles normal setting, re-tipping and polishing well. If the stone has fissures that reach the surface, keep it out of direct torch flame and acid pickle.
