A 1.42ct oval cabochon of natural cat's eye augite from Sri Lanka, measuring 7x6mm. The stone has a deep, dark olive-green body color with a polished dome. Under directional light a sharp, well-defined cat's eye band cuts brightly across the surface - a clean white line of reflected light that moves as the stone is tilted. The cat's eye effect is strong and clearly visible in the product photos.
Augite is a pyroxene species, and the cat's eye variety from Sri Lanka is rarely encountered in cut form. This is a cat's eye stone from a species most buyers will not have seen before in cabochon form. Untreated. Suited to a bezel pendant or ring setting where the cat's eye phenomenon can move freely in light.

About augite
Augite is 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale with good cleavage along two planes, so it needs protection from knocks and scratches.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft brush, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can crack it.
Wear and storage
The cat’s eye line comes from fine parallel fibers or needles inside the stone, which also make it slightly less tough than a clean faceted stone, so treat the domed surface gently. With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, and a knock can split it. Wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.

This augite is untreated. Augite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
