The deepest of the orange ovals here, and the one that leans furthest toward red. Across a softly cushioned 7.8 by 6mm face the body color runs a dark reddish orange close to mahogany, lit by clear cherry-red flashes through the whole left half while the right side holds a near-black brown. That split between glowing red and dark brown in one stone is the tourmaline showing its two crystal directions at once. A tiny golden speck sits at the top edge, and the interior carries natural inclusions consistent with SI clarity.
Tourmaline is strongly dichroic, which in warm brown-orange material produces exactly this pairing of a bright side and a dark side. Mozambique produces these deep reddish oranges alongside its better-known greens and pinks. The stone is untreated. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, comfortable for daily wear, and a rich autumnal oval of this size sets beautifully in yellow gold. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
