Intensely colored for its size: a 6.7 by 4.4mm oval in strong fuchsia-magenta with a clear purple lean, and a broad brighter zone across the table where light returns most directly. Below that, a network of fine internal fractures and dark needle wisps gives the pavilion a busy, glittering texture, and two bright white facet flashes sit on the crown. These are natural inclusions consistent with SI clarity.
Fine internal fracture networks are common in strongly colored rubellite, a consequence of manganese-rich tourmaline growing quickly, and in a stone this saturated they contribute sparkle. Untreated African material, with no filling. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, though a stone with visible fracturing is happiest in a protective bezel or a pendant. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.
Natural rubellite tourmaline, fuchsia magenta, October birthstone, sold loose.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This tourmaline is untreated. Tourmaline should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath.
