Warm and slightly earthy, this 6.6 by 4.4mm oval sits in rose-red to brick-rose territory with a gentle brownish cast, and the pavilion sends back a coral-red. The most distinctive feature inside is a single long golden-brown needle running diagonally across the lower half of the stone, clearly visible and quite decorative, alongside fine white pinpoints. Natural inclusions consistent with SI clarity.
Long single needles of this kind are grown-in features, and in warm-toned rubellite they look like gold thread through the color. Untreated African tourmaline. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale. The warm brick-rose tone is very much at home in yellow or rose gold, and at this size the stone works as a ring accent or a small pendant. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.
Natural rose-red rubellite tourmaline, untreated, sold loose.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This tourmaline is untreated. Tourmaline should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath.
