Small but lively, this 7 by 4.4mm oval carries a bright vivid magenta with plenty of transparency, and one crisp white facet flash at the upper right shows how well the polish has been kept. A neat set of short dark needles runs in parallel across the middle of the stone, and a small greyish patch reaches the surface at the top edge, natural inclusions consistent with SI clarity.
Parallel needles like these follow the growth direction of the crystal and are one of the ordinary identifying features of natural tourmaline; here they sit as a fine line. Untreated African rubellite. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and at this size and saturation the stone is ideal for a slim ring, a single-stone necklace, or as a colored accent alongside diamonds. Tourmaline is the modern October birthstone.
Natural rubellite tourmaline, vivid magenta, sold loose.

About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This tourmaline is untreated. Tourmaline should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath.
