Verdelite is the old varietal name for green tourmaline, and this one has been cut into an extremely slender baguette, 22.5mm long and just 3mm wide, roughly seven and a half times longer than it is broad. The narrow table is a quiet grey-olive, while the long side facets flash a much brighter chartreuse whenever the stone is tilted, so the color seems to switch between muted and vivid depending on the angle. A small cluster of golden pinpoints sits near the left end; otherwise the VS clarity keeps the interior clean and transparent.
Mozambique regularly yields green tourmaline in the long prismatic crystals that make cuts like this possible, since the rough itself grows in slim hexagonal columns. The stone is untreated. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, and a baguette of these proportions is a specialist piece: excellent as a linear accent alongside a center stone, in a channel, or as the whole subject of a minimal bar pendant. About tourmaline
Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with poor cleavage, so it wears well, but many stones contain fine internal fractures. When warmed or rubbed it picks up a static charge, so it attracts dust more than other gems.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can widen the fine fractures many tourmalines contain, especially pink and red ones.
Wear and storage
Tourmaline is hard enough for everyday wear, but a sharp knock can widen its fine fractures, so take it off for sport or heavy work. Harder stones such as topaz, sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
