The left stone in this set flashes blue with violet undertones and reads clean to the eye, while the center stone is a touch paler with a small dark pinpoint inclusion visible near its center. The stone on the right is the softest, a pale periwinkle with gentle, cool brilliance.
These tanzanites come from the Merelani Hills of Tanzania, the only source of the gem anywhere in the world, and have undergone the standard heat treatment used to bring forward their blue-violet color. A nicely balanced set for matching stud earrings or a subtle three-stone design.

About tanzanite
Tanzanite is the blue to violet variety of the mineral zoisite. At 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale, with perfect cleavage and fair toughness, it is softer and more fragile than sapphire, so it needs gentle handling.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. With a hardness below 7 it can be scratched even by quartz, which is found in household dust, so wipe it gently and store it on its own in a soft pouch. It suits pendants and earrings better than an everyday ring.

These stones are heated, and the color from heating is stable. Tanzanite should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
