The broadest of the large trillions at 15.8x15.5mm, this 17.69ct stone shares the rounded triangular outline of its companion but reads a shade softer through the center, where the light pools into a paler open field. Fine parallel growth striae are visible running diagonally through the upper right of the stone, a natural feature of the crystal it was cut from and only apparent at certain angles. The checkerboard edges are bright and busy against that quieter middle. Clarity is VVS with full transparency.
Growth striae are part of how topaz forms and are common in stones cut from large crystals, where there is simply more material for them to show in. Irradiation and a follow-up heating give Brazilian topaz this blue permanently. At nearly 18ct the stone works as a pendant center or as a piece kept loose for its own sake. December recognizes blue topaz among its birthstones, and few other December stones come this large at a sensible price.
Natural sky blue topaz, 17.69ct trillion, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
