Color is what this small London blue oval has going for it: a deep teal-leaning blue held right through the stone with almost no pale zones. The table carries a soft silky quality, a fine pinpoint texture that scatters light gently instead of returning it as hard sparkle, while the girdle facets stay bright turquoise. Face-up it looks darker than it does held against the light, which is characteristic of the London shade. Natural inclusions are visible on close inspection, consistent with the VS grade.
London blue is the darkest of the treated topaz blues, produced in Brazil by irradiating and heating colorless material well past the sky blue stage. At 6.3x5.6mm this is a practical accent or side-stone size, and the depth of color reads well next to white gold or silver. The tone also holds up in low light, which not every pale blue manages. About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
