Cooler and a touch greyer than the brighter sky blues, this 3.13ct trillion carries a steel-tinged blue that deepens through the pavilion and pales toward the three corners. Light moves across it in broad soft planes rather than sharp sparks, an effect of the slightly deeper cut. A fine white feather sits low on one side and catches the light as a pale flash at certain angles, with a small nick along the girdle near the same corner, both in line with the VS grade and both easy to tuck under a prong.
Sky blue topaz of this kind comes out of Brazil, where colorless rough is irradiated and heated to bring the blue up and hold it there. At 8.9mm across, the triangle has real presence for a stone just over 3ct, and the broad flat outline suits pendants and statement earrings better than a narrow claw ring. Blue topaz stands in as a December birthstone alongside tanzanite and zircon.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
