A rounded trillion at 15.6mm and 18.5ct, cut with softly curved sides rather than straight edges, which gives it a fuller, more sculptural shape than a conventional triangle. The blue is bright and clean, deepening along the curved edges where the checkerboard facets are densest and lightening through the broad center. Fine internal striations run through one side, visible when the stone is turned into the light and typical of large topaz crystals. Clarity is VVS and the stone is transparent right through its depth.
Large topaz is one of the few gem materials available at this size without a serious price, which is why it turns up so often in statement pendants and display pieces. This is Brazilian rough, irradiated and then heated. The curved triangular outline needs a custom mount, so it suits a maker with a design in mind rather than a stock setting. Blue topaz belongs to December.
Natural sky blue topaz, 18.5ct trillion, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
