At 18.8ct and just over 15mm across, this cushion is a display-scale stone in a bright turquoise-leaning blue that stays vivid from edge to edge. The crown is cut as a checkerboard, a dense field of small square facets ringing a wide open center, so the outer band sparkles busily while the middle holds a calm soft cross of light. The material is very clean at VVS, with the depth of the stone visible straight through. Cutting is symmetrical and the rounded-square outline is well balanced.
Stones of this size are bought as centerpieces or as collection specimens rather than for everyday rings, since almost 19ct is a great deal to carry on a hand. Brazilian topaz reaches this blue by irradiation followed by heating, and the color is permanent. A checkerboard crown suits a large stone because it breaks up what would otherwise be a big flat table. Blue topaz is a December birthstone, and at this scale it makes a serious gift.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.

This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
