The liveliest of the pale marquises, this 0.62ct stone throws a crisp run of bright chevrons down its length with strong contrast between the lit facets and the darker ones between them. The blue is light and cool and holds the same value from point to point. The polish is bright with no visible marks and the outline is straight, both tips cleanly finished. Clarity is VS with nothing to see inside.
Contrast is what makes a pale stone look cut rather than merely transparent, and this one has it in a way its softer neighbours do not. Irradiation followed by heating gives Brazilian topaz this blue permanently. Marquises work in pairs flanking a round or an oval, where their points lead the eye inward. Blue topaz is a December birthstone.
Natural sky blue topaz, 0.62ct marquise, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
