Bright chevrons run the full length of this 0.63ct marquise, alternating light and dark down the 8x4mm outline so the pattern reads clearly from across a room. The pale blue is cool and even, holding the same value at the tips as in the middle. Clarity is VS and the interior is clean. The girdle is level and the points are neatly cut.
A strongly patterned marquise carries a design on its own, which is useful when it is the only shaped stone in a piece. Brazilian topaz reaches its color through irradiation followed by heating. Four marquises in slightly different weights but matching outlines are a practical buy for a symmetrical setting. Blue topaz belongs to December.
Natural sky blue topaz, 0.63ct marquise, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
