A small nick sits at the left point of this 0.64ct marquise, right at the tip where the shape is thinnest, with a little darker marking along the same edge. Everything else about the stone is sound: a pale even blue, bright white flashes running down the center, and a straight symmetrical outline with a level girdle. A V-claw over that point covers it completely, which is how marquises are normally set in any case. Clarity is VS.
Points are the weak spot of every marquise and take knocks in handling long before the body of the stone does. This is Brazilian topaz colored by irradiation and a follow-up heating. Set with the marked tip protected, the stone reads as a clean pale blue marquise. December counts blue topaz among its birthstones.
Natural sky blue topaz, 8x4mm marquise, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
