Softer in contrast than its neighbours, this 0.64ct marquise carries a slightly greyer pale blue and returns light in broad overlapping planes rather than hard sparks. The effect is calm and glassy, which suits the elongated shape: the eye travels along the stone instead of stopping at individual flashes. Clarity is VS with a clean interior. The 8x4mm outline is symmetrical and the points are neatly finished.
Quieter stones like this pair well with a busier center gem, where three competing sparkles would clutter the design. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and heated to produce the blue permanently. Marquises set east-west across a band read as leaves or petals depending on the metalwork around them. Blue topaz answers to December.
Natural sky blue topaz, 0.64ct marquise, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
