Softer through the middle than its crisper companion, this 0.65ct marquise has a hazier band running along the center of the crown where the light spreads instead of reflecting cleanly. The pale blue is even and the two points are sharply formed, with the outline running straight down both sides. Clarity is VS with a clear interior. The stone reads quiet rather than flashy.
Small differences in pavilion angle explain most of the variation across a parcel like this, and a softer stone is often the better companion piece rather than the center. Irradiated and then heated Brazilian topaz is the source. Marquises set point to point make a graceful line along a band. December recognizes blue topaz among its birthstones.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
