Pale and icy, this 0.68ct marquise carries a soft cool blue that lightens toward both points and gathers a little deeper through the middle. The faceting is broad rather than fine, returning light in a few large planes, which suits the elongated outline and keeps the stone calm instead of busy. Clarity is VS with a clean interior. Both points are evenly formed and the girdle runs straight down each side.
Pale marquises are the easiest colored stones to work into a design that already has a strong center, since they add shape without adding a second color to manage. Brazilian topaz reaches its blue through irradiation followed by heating. V-claws over the points are standard practice for the shape. Blue topaz is among the stones December recognizes.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
