Stepping down to 9x7mm, this 2.41ct oval keeps a pale even sky blue with a softly glowing center and brighter facets around the rim. Moderate contrast gives it a calm face rather than a busy one, and the color holds steady from end to end. Clarity is VS with a clean interior and only faint natural texture under close light. The oval is neatly cut with sharp facet junctions.
Nine by seven millimetres is the size below the 10x8mm standard and costs noticeably less for a very similar look, which is worth knowing when several stones go into one commission. Brazilian topaz is irradiated and then heated to fix the blue. It fits stock settings without adjustment. Blue topaz belongs to December.
Natural sky blue topaz, 9x7mm oval, sold loose.

About topaz
Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so it resists scratches well, but it has perfect cleavage along one plane, and a sharp knock can split it even when the surface shows no scratches. It suits pendants and earrings, and rings too if worn with care.
Cleaning
Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush are all you need. Brush behind the stone too, where dust and skin oils collect, then rinse and dry with a soft cloth. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners: vibration and sudden temperature changes can start a crack along its cleavage.
Wear and storage
Take it off for sport, gardening or heavy work: a sharp knock can split it. Harder stones such as sapphire, ruby and diamond can scratch it, so store it on its own in a gem jar or a soft pouch.
For your jeweler
This topaz is irradiated, the usual treatment for this color. Topaz should be kept away from the torch flame, acid pickle and the ultrasonic bath. Ask for gentle pressure when setting, since a hard push can split it.
